Nonequilibrium statistical mechanics of swarms of driven particles

چکیده
As a rough model for the collective motions of cells and organisms we develop here the statistical mechanics of swarms of self-propelled particles. Our approach is closely related to the recently developed theory of active Brownian motion and the theory of canonicaldissipative systems. Free motion and motion of a swarms confined in an external field is studied. Briefly the case of particles confined on a ring and interacting by repulsive forces is studied. In more detail we investigate self-confinement by Morse-type attracting forces. We begin with pairs N = 2; the attractors and distribution functions are discussed, then the case N > 2 is discussed. Simulations for several dynamical modes of swarms of active Brownian particles interacting by Morse forces are presented. In particular we study rotations, drift, fluctuations of shape and cluster formation.

Nonequilibrium Statistical Mechanics of the Zero-Range Process and Application to Networks
Statistical mechanics is concerned with the study of systems with a large number of interacting constituents. Equilibrium statistical mechanics, originally introduced as a theoretical approach for thermodynamics, is well understood and a general theoretical framework exists. Nonequilibrium statistical mechanics is less well understood and no general theoretical framework currently exists. The s...
متن کاملThermal and athermal three-dimensional swarms of self-propelled particles.
Swarms of self-propelled particles exhibit complex behavior that can arise from simple models, with large changes in swarm behavior resulting from small changes in model parameters. We investigate the steady-state swarms formed by self-propelled Morse particles in three dimensions using molecular dynamics simulations optimized for graphics processing units. We find a variety of swarms of differ...
متن کاملNonequilibrium Monte Carlo simulation for a driven Brownian particle.
The author's nonequilibrium probability distribution is tested for time-varying mechanical work. Nonequilibrium Monte Carlo (NEMC) is used to simulate a Brownian particle in a soft-sphere solvent, driven by a moving external potential. Results are obtained for the phase lag and amplitude for drive frequencies ranging from the steady state to the transient regime. This now extends the applicatio...
متن کاملMesoscopic virial equation for nonequilibrium statistical mechanics
We derive a class of mesoscopic virial equations governing energy partition between conjugate position and momentum variables of individual degrees of freedom. They are shown to apply to a wide range of nonequilibrium steady states with stochastic (Langevin) and deterministic (Nosé–Hoover) dynamics, and to extend to collective modes for models of heat-conducting lattices. A macroscopic virial t...
متن کاملStationary nonequilibrium statistical mechanics
Systems in stationary nonequilibrium are mechanical systems subject to nonconservative external forces and to thermostat forces which forbid indefinite increase of the energy and allow reaching statistically stationary states. A system Σ is described by the positions and velocities of its n particles X, Ẋ, with the particles positions confined to a finite volume container C0. If X = (x1, . . .,...
